Lower energy bills
How to Reduce Your Electricity Bill
The most reliable way to lower an electricity bill is to find where the energy is going, then work on the largest practical loads first. Measurement usually beats guessing.
Start with the bill itself
Compare monthly kilowatt hour use rather than only the dollar total. Rates can change, so energy consumption gives you a clearer picture of whether the household is actually using more or less electricity.
Find the largest loads
Heating, cooling, water heating, electric dryers, cooking equipment, pool equipment, and other high power devices can dominate consumption. The biggest opportunity depends on the home.
Measure what you can
Utility interval data, smart meter portals, plug in energy meters, and equipment specifications can help identify patterns. Use appropriate tools and avoid opening electrical panels unless you are qualified to do so.
Fix waste before adding generation
Scheduling, thermostat settings, air sealing, maintenance, standby loads, and inefficient equipment can sometimes reduce consumption without adding a new power source.
Compare improvements by cost and impact
Estimate the annual energy a change can save, its installed cost, expected life, and any maintenance. This makes it easier to compare efficiency work with solar, batteries, or experimental DIY projects.
Be careful with dramatic savings promises
A product promising a very large bill reduction should be evaluated against your actual household consumption. Ask how many kilowatt hours it can realistically replace over a month, not just whether it can light a small load.
